About Us“If you spread your dreams before you, like a stairway to the sky, no star that you reach for, will ever be too high”The Cool School of Singing, now on Park Avenue in Hull, was founded and structured by Zanna Gregmar in 2004 to teach Performance Skills, Self Esteem and Confidence in young people of all ages 😉 from 5 to 80 years old…Zanna specialises in vocal development and care, to bring out the personality of each singer, to build and structure the voice from the very basic level into a tool which can be used with relaxed control and confidence.Learning to look after your voice properly, and using it correctly regardless of whether it’s in a perfect healthy condition or suffering from overuse or ill health is very important. There are so many factors which make a good singer: Proper Breathing, Voice support, Resonance, Tuning, Timing, Phrasing,Diction, Intensity, Use of Power and Range and the ability to make a song your own through improvisation, Feeling and use of Dynamics, and learning how to put all this into work for you so that you can sing/present a song in an engaging way.We cannot promise to turn you into a star but can certainly help you to become a confident singer and to “Be all that you can be” on stage or in the shower, with your voice developed to the peak of your ability…Zanna’s Studio is based in Hull*Zanna Gregmar is a singer/songwriter/musician and Broadcaster with some 40 years of experience in the music industry as a recording, performing and touring artist and broadcaster in Europe and USA. The Cool School of Singing

The Internationally Acclaimed Vocal Development Coach in Hull

Why take lessons?

"The technique she gave me helped me get through some long tours without losing my voice. Brilliant! Highly recommend."
Pat Pretorious (The Talks)

"But I can already sing well..??!"The voice is your instrument: singing is a skill, and in order to use the voice to its highest ability, and without damaging it, it is advisable to have some singing lessons or to learn good singing technique from the start. No matter how well you learn to use your instrument, there’s always room for improvement…Even skilled singers like Christina Aguilera, Michael Bublé and most of the singers we enjoy listening to, go for regular singing lessons just to make sure that they haven’t developed any bad habits and any help to get the most out of their voices. The voice is as we all know a very sensitive instrument and if it’s not maintained properly and used skilfully it can easily get damaged sometimes permanently. So it’s important to learn how to look after your voice as well as possible.

"It's my first lesson, I am nervous... "Most people feel nervous in the first lesson. The voice is the most intimate of all instruments, and I think many singers are afraid of getting judged. I am not going to judge you …If you have never had lessons or have never sung in public, you will probably not be singing in the first lesson. We will get to know each other and you will learn some basic skills that you need to know before you start to sing. I will do an assessment of your singing level/ vocal chords and we will make a plan for your vocal development.

"What's involved in a singing lesson?"You will learn new skills depending on your own level.
If you are a beginner, you will learn about posture, breathing, voice support, resonance, projection, diction, phrasing and healthy singing habits as you go along…
If you are a professional or semi professional performing singer, we will check for bad habits, help fix a strained voice, do any voice repair needed, preparation for a concert or a tour or recording. We can also look at individual songs and how to get the most out of them, to make them stand out with your particular voice/style and personality.

"What songs do we work on in lessons?"We will always be working with songs of your choice, or songs I think are suited for your voice /personality and level of skill.
It is my aim to help you find your own voice/style and “singing self” in order for you to develop to the peak of your ability

"Should I write my own songs? Can you help me?"Yes, I always encourage my students to write their own material whether just for fun or because there is a genuine interest to turn the singing into something more professional. I have helped many of them to start writing and developing songs/lyrics as well as perfecting and “tweaking”songs they have written. Both structure and content are very important in good songwriting and I can help you understand and develop the skills.
We will also record your songs as we go along.

"Isn't 'good singing' a matter of opinion?"Well Actually,  Good singing is Good singing!!
It means having the skills of correct placement, resonance, breathing, clear phrasing, tuning and controlled dynamics.
People often use the term “Good Singer” incorrectly as a reference to their own personal taste…
Say for instance that you don’t like Christina Aguilera, and because of that you say that she’s not good…  Christina will always be a good singer, actually a fantastically skilled singer, regardless what you think of her. To be correct you should simply say that you don’t like her style or voice.

"What style of singing do you teach?"I teach and help develop all styles except for Opera.
Often the style itself is something you need to feel inside yourself, and then I will teach you the skills and technique around it.

"Is there homework...?"Yes there is homework as I want you to practise the skills I teach you, but no written homework and no exams unless you decide to do grades. The homework I give is easy and fun, and you don’t need to set a lot of time aside for it unless you are a dedicated professional working towards a specific time monitored goal.
Many of my adult students sing their homework in the car…

"Do I need any special equipment?"No you don’t, but it’s sometimes good if you can record parts of the lesson, maybe on your phone,
And it is of course good if you have a sound system of some kind to play and learn songs…

"Do you teach microphone technique?"Yes, I teach microphone, recording and performance skills as well as the art of putting a good set list together.

"I need to make a demo - can you help?"Yes I can help you make a demo. I have recording equipment here and we can record in various ways. Tell me what you’d like to do and I will do my best to help you achieve your goal!

"Do you have any performance opportunities?"Yes I sometimes organise concerts according to demand.

"Could I come for a studio tour?"Yes, you could book  a taster session/assessment which would allow you to get acquainted with me, the studio and make a plan for your desired work/development and of course ask any questions you’d like."I would also like to know….??"Any further questions you have, please check in on the “Contact Us” button and write your question there, or call me and I will give you an answer.

"The improvements were immediate, from diet to technique.  Zanna's a great teacher and a great person"
Kristian Eastwood

I offer both in person one-on-one lessons in my studio, or lessons via Skype. If you are local to me I would highly recommend in person, but if you are further afield we can still make it work!Your first lessonWe will discuss your needs and get to know each other, and find out what you need/would like  to learn. I will also teach you a little about good basic singing skills.I will teach you a breathing exercise, and depending on your level of skill, some other appropriate exercises. I will check your range and tuning and I will, if time permits and you feel comfortable enough, want to hear you sing a song you feel fairly comfortable singing, either with a CD or backing track or if you have some written sheet of music with chord analysis (Symbols such as  C, G, Am, F7 etc…) then I can back you on the piano. This will show me your strengths as well as areas needing improvement. Now you can decide how often you want to come for your lessons.Currently I teach Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays, 12-7pm.*I offer 40 minute, hour long and two hour lessons. When I am fully booked I will be happy to put your name on a waiting list.To book your first lesson / assessment or if you have any further questions, please use the contact form on the website or send an e-mail to [email protected] or text or call me at 44-0782 8491644Please leave a message if you get the answering service as I never pick up the phone during a lesson.I’m Looking forward to hearing (from) you

Lesson DetailsPersonal tuition and coaching on a one – on – one basis throughout the yearI recommend one hour lessons, or 40min, but give an option of half hour lessons as well (recommended for young children). Lessons will be booked according to your needs as frequently as you wish. Here you will learn the different skills taught in the group lessons but in much greater depth and tailor made to your needs. Whether you have just started singing or are experienced and want some help , checking bad habits etc before a show…I will work with you according to your individual needs, and together we will agree on the format which best suits you.A generic format of a lesson would be split into two parts:The first part is technique:
You will learn Breathing techniques, Tuning, Voice control, Power, Projection, Voice expansion, Range expansion, Diction, Interpretation. Finding and developing your own unique style, finding the songs that are right for you, How to care for your voice and more…
The second part is skills practice:
You will now apply your new skills in a song of your choice. (Unless I think the song is unsuitable for you in which case I’ll advice you in a different direction or level of skill and together we’ll find a song we can work with)
You will sometimes work with a backing track, but always learn a new song through careful analysis of each phrase, with piano backing.
As you become more ready to face an audience, I can teach you performing skills from microphone technique, to creating a dynamic show!
* Please note I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, but I always try to reschedule where I'm able to.

Here's what some of my students have said...

"I always look forward to my weekly lesson with Zanna as I class her as a friend as well as a teacher. It is a chance to catch up and learn aspects of singing that I can’t find anywhere else. I have had previous singing lessons before Zanna but it has always been classical. I was ecstatic when I found out that Zanna could teach me in the style I was interested in (Country). This meant that I could learn and develop in the right field for me.Recording is just another adventure as I have never had the opportunity before these lessons. Strangely I feel like I sing better in front of a microphone. Zanna has already started teaching me how to sing into it so that it benefits my voice which I really appreciate. Learning how to breath properly and have the right projection has also been achieved. I love the excitement of the lessons and it has not faded!Song writing:
I thoroughly enjoy bringing my song lyrics and melody ideas to Zanna. I look forward to the song in my head being made into reality. I find it hard to complete songs without bringing them to one of the lessons as I have had trouble with timing in the past. I have learnt how important syllables are in song writing which I was unaware of before. I am getting better thanks to Zanna’s input."
~Paige Johnson

"Ellie has been having singing lessons with Zanna for several years.
She has learned new skills in many different areas, such as Voice, Songwriting and Confidence
Ellie had decided she wanted singing outside of school as she felt her choice/style of music would not be readily accepted by the school. Zanna was quickly able to establish a rapport with my daughter – discussing the types of music which they both enjoy.
During the course of her training she has gained in confidence; finally able to freely discuss her ambitions and possible career development. As Zanna has been a professional working musician before her teaching career this enables Ellie to understand the realities of her chosen path. The lessons have developed Ellie’s voice; even she (highly self-critical) states how much she feels she has improved.Together they have worked on her range using basic exercises and more complex techniques. This had enabled Ellie to sing songs which prove her range has increased. As her favourite music requires a great deal of power this has been an important aspect of her lessons. By explaining techniques which demonstrate how to achieve power Ellie now feels she has more power in her voice.Breathing exercises have been an integral part of the lessons. She now feels she has a good understanding and ability to control her breathing – the additional benefit being a quicker recovery after other sports activities.Zanna and Ellie have a good understanding of each other and we plan to continue lessons whilst she is in full time education."
~Ann Edwards re daughter Ellie

"I’ve had singing lessons with Zanna for a few years. I decided to go with her because of her background in the music industry and her experience.
I really enjoy my lessons as Zanna is friendly and understanding, making me feel comfortable throughout. I have really improved since starting with Zanna and am happy with my progress.
Songwriting:
Zanna also helps me with song writing, I bring my own songs and she helps me improve them. She doesn’t force her opinion on any of my stuff and allows songs to go in the direction I want them to. I’m so glad I have Zanna as my singing teacher and recommend her to everyone!"

Here's what some of my students have said...

"After hearing about her successful methods of coaching, I approached Zanna before an overseas tour, seeking her expertise in preventing me from losing my voice when singing aggressively. She took me back to basics and instilled confidence in my ability by showing me some essential techniques for strengthening, improving and maintaining my voice. Now I can sing with more power and control. Aside from learning to play the guitar, being taught how to sing properly by Zanna was one of the most fulfilling areas of my development as an artist and musician."~Terence James Dunne

"From as far back as
I can remember I have always suffered with my voice when singing, I never had any lessons or took any advice, however after years of stressing and always worrying about it I was finally put in touch with Zanna for a few lessons, the improvements were immediate, right from diet to technique, everything I was shown and told by Zanna made sense and I not only leaned very quickly how to look after my voice, but also mentally how to use my body in a balance with it, I now use the techniques and warm ups before every performance and strongly advice any other vocalists who want to take their singing seriously to visit Zanna, she's a great teacher and a great person xxxx"
~Kristian Eastwood, Singer/songwriter/musician

"From working with Zanna, I've developed a better sense of place in different parts of my range and I know how to tackle certain notes and sounds now. Whereas before I'd find myself inconsistent in my higher and passagio vocals, Zanna really helped me to tie these sections of my voice down so I could move through them freely without having to worry about them. The exercises and warmups I've been through with her have become a staple of my routine, both when I perform and when I practice. I've learned a lot about producing different sorts of sounds with my voice in order to communicate different ideas and feelings. On top of all of this, Zanna is a very personable, very empathic individual and is capable of making a student feel totally comfortable in her sessions."

" Zanna has been a massive influence on the way that I sing.
She gave me kind, constructive criticism that made me want to make progress! She taught me a technique for singing low notes, which is now burned into my natural technique.
Most importantly, Zanna has greatly boosted my confidence over my years on knowing her, commenting on my use of accent and pronunciation and taking note of my progress.Zanna Gregmar is an absolute star, she is kind, supportive and an ideal singing teacher for both beginners and the more experienced! Why would anyone wish to go elsewhere?"

"Best singing teacher I've ever worked with, lucky she was in Hull to help me out.
The technique she gave me helped me get through some long tours without losing my voice.
Brilliant! Highly recommend."
~Patrick Pretorious (The Talks) singer /songwriter /multi-instrumentalist and performer extraordinaire

"I originally came to Zanna on the strong recommendation of a friend. After trying various things to help me with my vocal endurance and having no luck, her lessons revolutionised my vocal technique, enabling me to perform consistently night after night!
Not only that but, through honing my skills with Zanna, I found that the quality of my voice improved dramatically after being coached through everything from my breathing, support and tuning, my range has benefitted tremendously too!
As if that wasn't enough, her personally professional teaching style helped give me an opportunity to share creative ideas, gave me a better idea of the complex industry I look to tackle and, at the end of the day, have a ridiculously good time doing it!
When it comes down to it, I wouldn't have half the voice I have today without Zanna, I wouldn't be thinking as deeply about the path I want to take and I wouldn't have that confidence in my voice, or in myself, that she's so expertly nurtured.
Sing with Zanna. I did and I'll never look back!
(She's also stupidly good value too!)"
~"Xander Edwards
Singer/songwriter/musician, London

"'I remember the dark time before meeting Zanna, whenever I began to sing nothing but tuneless noise came out! I wouldn’t even sing to myself! But now after getting lessons it all seems like a lifetime ago. Zanna has taught me all the skills needed to set that voice free! Whether I’m just writing songs at home or blasting out three part harmonies with the band, I’ve got the confidence to deliver and perform. What I like the most is that Zanna’s not just a vocal coach, she’s a musician. For someone like myself that wants a serious career in music, I really value and respect her opinion. I can turn up with my guitar and songbook and she’ll give her expert advice. To have that help in the creative process is unique and it’s perfect for musicians that not only want to sing, but want to apply that knowledge to their own songs.
Thanks Zanna!'
~Callum Smith, Singer /songwriter/musician

"I credit Zanna with not only giving me the necessary techniques to become a successful singer, but also setting me on the right tracks to become a confident and professional individual. Lessons are always fun and relaxed, consisting of the necessary exercises to warm up so as not to damage the voice, build up support, practising breathing techniques and ensuring good word-placement and diction, with an opportunity to sing popular music at the end of the session.
Zanna includes tips and techniques in her lessons which are unique and easy to understand and adopt, much have which have stayed with me to the present day, and she teaches in a warm and friendly way thus eliminating any nerves a new singer may feel and enabling her to successfully teach a wide age-range of students. She is able to respect and cater for a wide range of musical interests and will endeavour to work around a student’s individual voice-type, allowing the freedom of development which many singing teachers often attempt to eradicate.
Since having lessons with Zanna, the power in my voice increased immensely and via practising the exercises she includes in her lessons I was able to have full control over my voice, as well as developing my range from around 2 octaves to 3 and a half.
Zanna is a great source of support with many issues surrounding singing, and she has the necessary experience in the industry to be able to give sound advice to anyone wishing to step into the music business.I believe the lessons to be truly exceptional and highly recommendable; Zanna is an enthusiastic teacher who is passionate about the art of singing and is therefore able to nurture students to achieve great sounding vocals, a superbly crafted stage presence and ultimately, their dreams of becoming a singer."~Sarah McCluskey, Singer/songwriter/musician

Here's what some of my students have said...

"I went to Zanna when I was busking and gigging for a living. It didn't take long before I could sing for hours and feel like I was singing far stronger at the end than at the beginning. It made a big difference to the amount I could earn. I've now been played on BBC radio 6 music and I know that I owe the strength of my voice to Zanna. Thanks Zanna! x "
~Chris Welburn

"I find writing this hard, it basically comes down to the fact no words can describe how much Zanna means to me, as a teacher, an artist and a friend. Singing with Zanna has brought me so much light and happiness when I have been in dark places. I have learned to be comfortable with my own voice, to perform for others and incredible development exercises and techniques that improved my voice weekly. I believe that Zanna has changed my life, she developed my confidence that enabled me to audition for a place at university and I am now a proud owner of a Bachelors Degree in performance. I owe everything to Zanna and I feel so proud to know her and so lucky to have had her amazing tuition and guidance."
~Vicky Kelly, Singer/Performer/Teacher

"Zanna has been much more that simply a vocal instructor. She has guided me every step of the way, which has allowed me to gain the self-confidence, especially through challenging emotional times, to find my own true singing voice and to follow my heart. She uses powerful techniques and exercises that strengthen the vocal range and breath-control, whilst nurturing the development of the voice with time and patience. Zanna approaches sessions with beautiful passion and enthusiasm, igniting and amplifying my own love for music and expression, freely and playfully, helping me realize that anything is possible in music and life.
I love you Zanna from all my heart and soul."
~Dani, Recording and Performing Musical Artist, New York City

"Testimonial for the great Zanna Gregmar;Zanna Gregmar! Well where do I begin? She's talented, wonderful and soulful!I went to her for a lesson as I felt like the singing tuition I was already receiving through university wasn't beneficial for me. I desperately sought a teacher who I could connect with and who could teach me how to develop my voice in the right way. After teaching me a few basic exercises on posture, breathing and relaxation, a lot of my problems that I had been tackling for ages were quickly solved. Zanna has described me as a very passionate person which shows through when I'm singing. When I first started having lessons this passion would sometimes work to my disadvantage as I would over project my voice and lose control of it. Zanna soon taught me how to reign it in and that I can still show as much passion through my voice without being so loud and overpowering. One of Zannas famous quotes would be; 'take control of the lion inside you and reign it in, give just 90 percent in a performance so that you always have something more to give to the audience the next time, always leave them wanting more'.Zanna makes you feel so welcome and relaxed, it really is fun to work with her. If I ever hear that anybody is looking into starting singing lessons, I always recommend Zanna. She is a talented woman full of wisdom and kindness and she loves to share her knowledge with others and help others get to where they want to be, she truly cares for her students. Not to mention, she has an amazing soulful voice that I could listen to all day! xxx

"As a busy professional singer performing at weddings and restaurants I started to notice that my voice was beginning to get tired and croaky after performing regularly (3 to 4 gigs per week). Although I was aware of my own vocal style and technique I felt that with some training I could improve, learn some new techniques and more importantly improve and look after my tired vocal chords.I first went to see Zanna at Cool School in 2006 and explained that my voice was tired and that my vocal chords were feeling tight and sore. I also work as a teacher and so my voice is my main working tool. She very patiently listened to what I had to say, took on board my professional position and we set to work. She took me through various vocal training techniques concentrating on stretching my range, projecting my sound and incorporating breathing and diaphragm control. I felt a vast improvement in my vocal chords within weeks once I started to use the techniques Zanna had taught me. No only did my voice stop being tired and sore but my style of singing improved dramatically. My projection of sound was stronger, my diction became more pronounced (important when singing jazz) and there was a new clarity to the notes I sang.Zanna is a very experienced and patient teacher who knows her specialist subject better than anyone I have met. She is also a very successful performer, songwriter and musician. She has all the tips, techniques and experience needed to help any budding performer/musician, amateur or otherwise, make a career out of something that is so special, music!"

"In 2006 I came to Zanna for singing lessons. She was my last hope as I had lost my confidence and had received some hurtful comments from other professionals. I was on the verge of giving up. Zanna rebuilt my confidence and taught me a variety of skills. She showed me how to gage my audience and create a set which suits them, create patter with the audience and try new songs that I thought I could not achieve, The most important thing she taught me was to believe in myself.I now work for a highly reputable agency in Hull and have regular gigs. I also receive bookings for private gigs. I have sung to a variety of audiences and venues including weddings, pubs, clubs and parties. I can’t believe how close I was to giving up, but I am so pleased I didn’t.A very grateful Sam Fell"

Here's what some of my students have said...

" I cannot recommend Zanna as a singing teacher enough... In my son's words, 'she is amazing'.
He started singing with Zanna when he was 8 and he is now 14 and has a wonderful singing voice and great musicality all learnt from lessons with Zanna.
He now attends the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London and it was Zanna who prepared him for his audition for the school. Within a month of being at the school he appeared in his first West End show 'The Children of Eden' and then went on to get a 6 month contract as Gavroche in Les Miserables in the west end and this year he has finished another 6 month contract in Matilda the musical.
We owe his success to Zanna's professionalism, dedication and hard work with our son Marcus. His early training with her set him up for success singing in West end shows.
Zanna is also such a warm hearted, fun teacher and when Marcus is back in Hull he loves to visit her. The best singing teacher ever!"

"Zanna's singing lessons helped me to defeat my fear of singing. Through the lessons, I've learnt to use my voice more naturally and freely. The lessons have also helped me greatly with my acting, since vocal use is an important aspect of acting. Especially my breathing and support was developed through the exercises, simultaneously increasing my confidence in singing. Zanna is both a very encouraging and gentle teacher.I've been to many singing teachers, and thus know how important it is to find one you can trust. Zanna's strength is also that she can help with mastering the core of singing technique no matter what style of singing you're interested in."

"I found my voice quickly getting stronger and got to learn new areas too.
Zanna added to my breathing technique, as well as teaching me new ways to support and stabilize my voice. She taught me how to focus on my singing and tuning paying attention to every note without loosing out in the interpretation and performance
I have noticed a big change and always find it very helpful when i am warming up my voice and learning new songs and most of all when performing.
Zanna uses the piano a lot to develop the voice and tuning, we worked on notes and scales to find my range, and to add to it. My range has increased and I love the idea that I now can use different areas of my voice.I've always been lucky with power in my voice, and now I feel comfortable using that power, knowing that I can control it and go from a very loud passage in a song to a very soft either clear or breathy sound in a second.
I’ve become much more confident as an actor and a performer and to express all this in song is wonderful.
I have always enjoyed going to my lessons, adding to what I know and learning new aspects. What can I say, the business advice I got from Zanna is without a doubt the best around. She taught me about Nutrition, lifestyle, how to best prepare a rehearsal or a performance for a maximum effect, well these are all part of the joys, things I have learned and taking with me where ever i go and whatever I do."

"I began singing lessons with Zanna Gregmar in the summer of 2013. At the time I was preparing to sing in an amateur production with my theatre group and, having not sung on stage in a very long time, I sought a tutor to help to rebuild my voice and also to help me regain some confidence in my own ability. I have previously had two other singing teachers and although my voice did improve from these lessons my self-confidence has always been lacking. My confidence has grown immensely since I started singing with Zanna. Part of this is from the noticeable difference in my vocal ability. My vocal range has improved significantly as has my breathing technique. This is very apparent with songs that I have sung with other tutors previously, where I have struggled with particular notes or longer phrases, which I am now able to sing without difficulty.Appropriate breathing technique has always been something that I have struggled with due to a medical condition where my oxygen saturation levels are low and thus effects my breathing on a day to day basis. I have always felt that Zanna has understood and supported me in the ways that I have needed, adjusting each lesson to suit what I feel capable of that day.I thoroughly enjoy my lessons with Zanna. She provides me with a lot of variety in my lessons and challenges me to improve but always makes me feel comfortable with whatever we are doing. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with her and I intend to remain her pupil for a long time to come."~Adele Williams Actor/singer

"I have always enjoyed singing but felt like I needed some help with various areas. Zanna was very highly recommended to me when I was 16 years old from a number of people. She was not only my singing teacher but really helped me with a lot of areas in my life by her compassionate personality. Before I started singing lessons I used to have a tendency to sing through my nose and had a very small range because I did not know how to use my diaphragm to my advantage. Through general advice on how to find and use my diaphragm, breathing techniques and being introduced to the idea of use my 'head voice' within a very short space of time I increased my range to an octave and a half not only on the high notes but also on the low notes and still feel like this is improving to date.
As I have previously stated I use to sing through my nose, this is no longer an issue because of the singing technique exercises we start each lesson with. The good thing about these is that we started kept to the same ones for a number of weeks but gradually developed the range or difficulty, I found this very useful and also gave me some ideas of how to practise on my own outside of my lessons.
My confidence in singing has grown rapidly since I have started and I now have experience with singing in muscial productions, wedding anniversaries and weddings themselves.
Zanna makes all my singing lessons very enjoyable with a very relax atmosphere and can work on a number of different song choices and styles of my choice, which I find very useful! She also is open to give me advice on personal areas of my life and takes great interest in how I am generally and my health. I often get colds and sore throats and she gave me few ideas of how I can stop these and protect my voice which has proven to work.
